Claudia Guadarrama from Mexico is the winner of the fifth Canon Female Photojournalist award for her photographs depicting illegal migrants on the South Mexican border.
The first award was presented in 2001, with the aim to draw attention to the work of women photojournalists. Guy Bourreau from Canon comments: ?With women making up only 11% of the world?s photojournalists, the original objective of the award was to address the under-representation of women in this field?. now in its fifth year, the award has also proven to be a valuable way to discover new talent.?
The award was presented to Guadarrama by the French Association of Women Journalists at the International Festival of Photojournalism (Visa pour l?Image) in France. She wins an 8000-euro grant from Canon, which she can use to pursue a year-long documentary project that can be presented at next year?s festival.
