With their price falling and capacities expanding, an external hard drive seems to be the obvious solution for backing up your hard drive.

The Transcend StoreJet SATA hard drive provides this but does so in a compact, stylish form.

At only 13mm thick and measuring just slightly larger than your average PDA, it certainly doesn’t compete for desktop space and is lightweight enough to qualify as fully portable. Meanwhile, the 5540rpm drive is housed within a sleek aluminium casing, with power coming in the form of a separate USB connection.

In use, it does pretty much exactly what it’s supposed to. It’s mainly a drag-and-drop affair, with files transferring at speeds of up to 60mbps through a USB 2.0 connection, also featuring a backwards compatibility with a USB 1.1 port. The software package that comes with the drive, StoreJet Elite, allows for the easy backing-up and management of files, with additional encryption and password protection options available.
