Operation, fringing and speed aren’t strong points, but great images can still be achieved.
The 8-megapixel Fujifilm FinePix Z100fd is a stylish compact that features a 5x zoom, CCD-shift image stabilisation and face detection.
Design and Performance
A few jaws dropped when the Z100fd arrived at WDC – this really sets a benchmark for style. Its brushed metal finish is complemented by a diagonally sliding lens cover that houses a 5x optical zoom – still a rarity in such a small body.
In addition, there’s also sensor-based image stabilisation, a 2.7in LCD screen and up to ISO 1600, so it gets brownie points for its spec. Face Detection works well, though not quite with the dexterity of other systems. Its biggest let down is its operation – a long-winded menu system, and a lens whose proximity to the edge of the camera makes getting a finger into shots far too easy.
Image Quality
Images are fairly pleasing – good colour and detail is maintained, and while there’s a little noise in shadow areas at all ISOs, images at ISO 200 and under are fine. Edge and corner sharpness are neither good nor bad; the only main gripe is purple fringing.
