Canon EOS M3 Review – Image Quality
As the Canon EOS M3 features the same 24.3MP sensor as the Canon EOS 750D and 760D, you might expect a high level of image quality. On the whole, this is the case.
The high megapixel count delivers a good level of resolution. It doesn’t capture quite the same level of sharpness as some competing 24MP APS-C sensors owing to the inclusion of an anti-alias filter, although the benefit of the filter is that there is less chance of encountering unwanted artefacts.
In terms of colour, JPEGs untouched out of the camera offer a punchy colour palette, while the auto white balance is also pleasingly reliable.
Image noise, meanwhile, is a bit of a mixed picture. At the lower ISO settings the M3 delivers excellent results, with little visible noise up to ISO 400. At ISO 800 noise begins to block in the shadows, although settings right up to ISO 3200 and just beyond remain usable.
It’s at the highest ISO settings that images really suffer, with careful processing needed from Raw files to gain usable results.
Finally, the M3 does lag a bit behind its competitors with regards to dynamic range – don’t expect to be able to bring too much detail back from shadows and highlights.
