Is Leica's new u2018Made in Germany' premium accessory range worth the asking price?

Leica has introduced a series of new high-quality accessories: the ‘Made in Germany’ range.

Chief among the new products is the Travelling Tripod, a carbon-fibre offering that weighs just 1.2kg.

Also available are two Leica Ball heads, the 24 and 38, which are designed to complement the tripod with a compact, lightweight build that allows them to disappear inside the tripod when it is collapsed.

The 24mm-diameter ball head weighs just 140 grams, and Leica says it can support a camera system with a ‘light lens’.

The 38mm ball head includes a tilt feature that restricts movement to just the vertical plane and a 360º panorama feature that does so with the horizontal. Both heads are compatible with a series of three quick-change mounting plates, sold separately.

Leica assures that the range has been extensively engineered to deliver premium stability and portability. This does, however, come with its cost. The Traveller Tripod will set you back £430, the Ball Head 24 £200 and the Ball Head 38 a generous £330. If you want the three exchangeable plates that’s an extra £40, and a Cordura bag for the Traveller Tripod is an extra £60.

So, if you wanted a tripod and 38mm ball head, with the bells and whistles, you would expect to pay £860(!).

All the accessories will be available from the Leica Store Mayfair, starting this month. For more details visit www.leica-storemayfair.co.uk.
