DSLR cameras for £1500+:

Canon 1DMk4
Canon EOS 1D Mark IV

The 1D Mk IV is one of the best DSLRs ever produced. As to whether it is better or worse than Nikon’s D3s is too close to call without direct comparison testing between the two.

It’s fair to say, though, that both have their benefits and faults and on comparing their ISO performances on our colour chart, the 1D Mk IV doesn’t control noise as well above 12,800 but it does have other strengths.

Summary:

18 megapixels
Has a maximum ISO of 102,400
Has a manual exposure mode
Has HD video
Has a large LCD screen
Takes cf media cards

Nikon D3s
Nikon D3S

The D3s will be difficult to forget as the first to offer an ISO range that makes almost any lighting condition a shooting potential.

It builds on the proven success of the D3, with its 51-point AF system, build quality and sensor, but with the addition of this new ISO range and movie functionality it deserves recognition in its own right.

This is a professional camera, designed to be a work tool, but it produces such beautiful images and works so well, it inspires photographers and leaves them drooling at its very sight.

Summary:

12 megapixels
Has a maximum ISO of 102,400
Has a manual exposure mode
Has HD video
Has a large LCD screen
Has built-in anti shake
Takes cf media cards

Sony a900
Sony a900

It should come as no surprise that the A900 is a solidly built DSLR, capable of producing highly detailed images.

From a practical consideration, its resolution and the Carl Zeiss optics currently available make it a perfect match for landscape and studio photographers, as well as anyone else needing high-resolution files.

With its full-frame sensor, those still holding on to their Minolta lenses will also regain their wide angles. Hats off to Sony for the grip and flash options it provides for use with the model, too.

Summary:

Over 24 megapixels
Has a maximum ISO of 6400
Has a manual exposure mode
Has a large LCD screen
Has built-in anti shake
Has a built-in flash
Takes cf media cards
