Panasonic’s latest CSC joins the popular GX range, updating one of the most popular Lumix CSCs to date.

Panasonic has today announced the latest addition to its extensive range of CSCs in the shape of the Panasonic Lumix GX8.

While recent times has seen string of new camera launches do little more than change a few features on their predecessor, the GX8 features such a raft of improvements that it can certainly be deemed a complete overhaul rather than a slight improvement.

Nigel Atherton got his hands on the new GX8 ahead of its launch today to take a closer look at what promises to be one of this year’s hottest releases.

Panasonic Lumix GX8 – First Look

One of the first major improvements on the models predecessor is found under the bonnet, as the GX8 sees the debut of an all-new 20.3MP Live MOS sensor. This has been in development for several years, and brings with it Panasonic’s 4K video technology.

With that 4K video technology arrives the ability to grab still images at an 8MP resolution from the video – a process which is made easier through a trio of dedicated shooting mode; Burst, Start/Stop and Pre-burst., the latter of which records images a second before the buttons is pressed.

There are also two key improvements found which will aid photographers when it comes to image composition and review.

The GX8’s LCD screen can now be pulled away from the body and rotated around 180-degrees

The GX8 features an updated 3in touchscreen OLED which now features full articulation away from the body as opposed to the simple hinging mechanism which was found on the camera before.

Perhaps more impressive in terms of upgrades is the EVF. The unit maintains its pleasing 90-degree tilting mechanism, but now offers great magnification and a resolution of 2.3m-dots as well is improved corner sharpness according to Panasonic.

The GX8 is bigger in the hand than the GX7, but it does benefit from a more pronounced handgrip giving a more comfortable hold

When you see the camera in the flesh, perhaps the first thing that strikes you is the relative increase in size of the camera. Unlike most upgrades which are shrunk, the GX8 is actually around 20% larger than the GX7 and it is perhaps more akin to a larger LX100 than its predecessor.

One of the benefits of this increase in size is that the GX8 benefits from a much larger handgrip than its predecessor, which in turn makes the camera more comfortable in the hand.

Also the type and configuration of dials have been changed significantly, with an exposure compensation dial arriving for the first time on a Lumix CSC in a double-decker arrangement with the mode dial.

A host of other buttons are housed around the body and make the shooting process a pleasure, while the entire body is now also dust and weather-sealed giving the model a premium feel.

The Panasonic Lumix GX8 will be available from the end of August in a selection of kits of prices – £1069 body only; £1149 with the 14-42mm kit lens; £1399 with the 14-140mm lens; and £1799 with the 12-35mm f/2.8 lens.
