As Japan’s sole species of monkey, the snow macaque lives in the Japanese Alps, where snow covers the ground for much of the year. With its distinctive red face and fluffy light brown fur the snow macaque certainly lends itself well to photography, with the baby macaques in particular able to generate their fair share of ‘ooohs’ and ‘ahhs’.

Angel’s wildlife photography is up to its usual high standards throughout the book, and captures the full range of behavioural traits, moods and expressions common to her subjects. Her images are enhanced by informative captions and running text that add extra context and information to the pictures. As a concise introduction to Japan’s monkey population, this is hard to beat
