What can you expect for the bargain basement price of £69? Out of the box the Canon Pixma MP150 looks dearer than its price tag until you realise that there is no LCD display, memory card slots, CD/DVD printing or film scanning capability. At least the unit is compact and neat, as well as being built to Canon’s usual high standards. The MP150 utilises Canon,s new combo ink tanks system with integrated print heads. This is a backward step from Canon’s pioneering cheaper-to-run single ink tank system with separate print head. But the new combo tanks mean Canon can produce a product with a cheaper price to start with. This could be excused if photo print quality was good, but prints lack sparkle because of muddy blacks despite Canon’s much-vaunted FINE printing technology. Printing speed was middling, at four and a quarter minutes to print a borderless A4 photo. Scan quality is good, only let down by a slight greenish tint to grey tones. Use of mainly dye-based inks on microporous papers means the MP150 is not a strong contender in the photo print life stakes.
