Canon PowerShot SX60 HS Review – Verdict

With its expansive focal range, vari-angle LCD display and improved EVF the SX60 HS offers plenty of flexibility. On top of this handling is decent, and in the right conditions it’s also capable of good image quality.

That said, the SX60 HS – like the vast majority of small-sensor superzooms – does have its limitations, especially in terms of overall image quality when faced with tricky high-contrast and low-light situations. Autofocus performance isn’t particularly speedy either. And while having the equivalent of 1365mm at your fingertips might sound impressive on paper, in reality most people will struggle to keep the camera steady without the assistance of a tripod.

As regards value for money, the current street price of around £449 makes the SX60 HS somewhat expensive compared to its chief rivals. As is usually the case, we’d expect to see the price fall in coming months, after which it will become a much better proposition value wise. For this reason, anyone with their heart set on the SX60 HS may want to consider holding back for a month or two.

While the SX60 HS does currently have the edge over its rivals in terms of telephoto reach, there are a number of features found on rival models that are notable by their absence here – an automatic eye sensor and touchscreen control being two notable examples. Ultimately, while the SX60 HS might currently boast the biggest optical zoom, it’s not quite enough to make it the best superzoom on the market.
