Canon EOS 7D Mark II Review – Verdict

As mentioned in the introduction, there was certainly a long wait for the Canon EOS 7D Mark II to come along to replace the popular Canon EOS 7D.

The good news is that the new model arrives with a wide range of improvements which can be fairly described as class-leading.

Firstly, the sensor sees and upgrade in resolution from 18MP to 20MP, giving the pro shooter a bit more wriggle room when it comes to cropping in on their images.

The enthusiast shooter is also well catered for when it comes to the camera’s AF set-up, itself a feature which has been improved up in comparison to its predecessor.

The new 65-point cross-type AF set-up is as good as any in its class, delivering fast and responsive focusing in a wide range of conditions. Where it really impresses, however, is when it comes to tracking moving subjects – an area in which you’ll have absolutely no problems in keeping up with even the most agile of targets.

The build quality is also worthy of note, and with full weather proofing and intelligently aligned buttons its certainly one of the better built enthusiast DSLRs on the market.

There are a few disappointments, most notably the absence of built-in Wi-fi connectivity and an underspecified LCD screen which is lacking in any kind of touchscreen of vari-angle functionality.

Overall, despite the high price tag at launch the Canon EOS 7D Mark II might well be one of the very best APS-C DSLRs money can buy.
