Review: I don’t know about you, but I always try to get a window seat on a flight. No matter how short the journey, or whether the flight is to be solely over ocean or at night, I always specify that I’m by the window and away from the wing, affording me a clear sight at whatever I pass. Sometimes I even try to capture what’s passing underneath, but often to little success due to mucky windows or glare. However, the art of photographing from the air is one that Klaus Francke has mastered. Francke has spent more than 30 years photographing the most isolated and unusual places in the world, from the volcanoes of Iceland to the deserts and saltpans of Australia and Namibia. Francke observes these landscapes and foreign lands from a Cessna 172 at heights between 300 and 1,500 metres. Each photograph is accompanied by full text from Alexander Smoltcyzk, providing context, history and often great scientific detail about each photograph. As a whole, The Earth as Art is an excellent coffee table book that’ll no doubt change the way you look out of plane windows for the rest of your life!
