When pondering a location that will provide a wide variety of different subjects to shoot, your back garden is probably pretty low down on the list. However, consider for a second if you will the sheer variety of plant and natural life that occurs a little beyond your back door, and also the ways it varies from one season (and in the UK often one day), to the next and maybe you’d start to move it a touch further up the list.

If you’re still not convinced, then maybe you should take a look at Garden Photographer of the Year – Collection 1, an assortment of both the winning and commended images from this years’ Garden Photographer of the Year competition. The collection comprises of a fascinating range of images – from far-flung exotics ornamental gardens to an isolated tree on the South Downs, a candid snap of a grass snake to an intense portrait of wasp and ant doing battle.

The standard of images is fantastic and inspirational, and is enough to make you feel a pang of green in your fingers and want to get out there exploring in and around your garden.
