The 8.3-megapixel Canon IXUS 850 IS benefits from a 3in LCD PureColour screen, but loses the viewfinder of the 850 IS.

Bigger Screen

Following on from the popular 850 IS is the latest in the style-driven and ever-popular IXUS range from Canon, the 860 IS. Changes are small yet noticeable between the two models: the sensor size has received a boost from 7MP to 8MP, though the main improvement comes with the LCD screen – a 2.5in, 207,000 pixel LCD has evolved into a stunning 3in, 230,000 pixel, scratch resistant, PureColour screen. And, as before, the 3.8x optical zoom wideangle lens is joined by image stabilisation.

Performance and Image Quality

The 860 IS is a pleasure to operate; image capture is prompt, as is their reviewing, while the layout is eye-catching without being too complex. And while images are soft in the corners of the frame, overall image quality is excellent. The only real deterrent is in the camera’s price, though market forces have already dropped the street price substantially.
