Fuji HS10 review

As an owner of a Fuji s100fs I'm wondering if the Fuji HS10 could be an upgrade. Do you know how the image quality of these two cameras compares?

Get real! If the sensor on the HS10 were enlarged to APS-C size, the camera and lens would be much bigger and heavier, so negating the advantage of being smaller than a DSLR. I agree that EVFs could be much better though.

Shouldn't the size of the lens be 24-720mm equivalent, not 24-270mm?

is the sensor a Canon?

I own a Fuji s100fs, and recently acquired an HS10. I shoot RAW, and s100fs images are better than what the bundled Silkypix can make from the HS10. Using the "pro" Silkypix in "superneutral" to make 16-bit tiffs is different - the HS10 overtakes the s100fs...just. both good cameras. NO REMOTE RELEASE though which is dumb, IMHO

I think the HS10 is one of the best "Bridge" type cameras I have used so far,and I have used Panasonics and various Fujis.It is a real alternative to a DSLR,as it can produce really sharp A4s,on a par with my Nikon D40,but with a far more versatile lens system,and much lighter than the D40,and a bag of lenses! It looks and feels like a "proper" camera,unlike my previous Panasonic FZ28,and feels very well made.There are a multitude of functions,however.and it takes some time to get really familiar with using the HS10,but it's time well spent. I agree about the small viewfinder,which is all too common on this type of camera,but the large 3" screen is great for framing your shots,and more than makes up for the small viewfinder. All in all,it's a great camera,and Fuji deserves credit for it!

I have just had my otherwise very good HS10 updated by Fuji with the very latest version 3 Firmware.The website doesn't even mention it yet.The camera is much better at focussing at the "long" end of the zoom,and just handles much better. Get yours updated ASAP!!!

Even though this camera has a small viewfinder and no remote - it is still a very good camera. The photo in this review doesn't do the camera justice (do a search on flickr for HS10). I've taken some stunning, detailed shots with this cam; great for capturing wildlife and, especially with an additional raynox lens, really close-up macro. The camera, while packed with features, isn't difficult to use: its menus, dials and buttons are easy to navigate. All in all, and despite its flaws, it's the best bridge/DSLR camera I've used.

Bought my camera last Friday as an upgrade of my 5700 - absolutely Delighted, almost! Jessops and Amazon claim a 2x digital zoom in addition to the amazing x30 optical zoom. Fuji do not, there is no mention in the handbook or their web page and Jessops could not help. I noticed that the FinePix s200EXR looks very simiiar, take a look at page 17 of the 200EXR handbook, follow the instructions and lo and behold the 2x digital zoom is "found" on the HS10.

I have had my HS10 for a month now and its amazing both in handling and image quality. Having read a review here I am not sure if my camera has the firmware update. How would I know ?

I was ready to buy this Fuji HS10 camera from the local photo shop, until I read the almost all poor reviews from several sites. Are there any more good reviews out there. I was impressed with what I saw at the store with this camera. I'm wanting to take shots of a professional performer and I can't always get close enough for lighting needs, or zoom limits. But I need something that will take photos fast. Also is the movie quality really that bad? I cannot have a loud camera either, that could interrupt the performance. What are the advantages of paying 400 more for a real SLR?

A faster card doesn't make a lot of difference to the speed of the HS10,but the pictures are really good,and it just feels so solid and well made. The new Canon SX30 is no quicker to use than the Fuji,and the lens isn't as sharp.The HS10 is a great camera,even with a couple of minor drawbacks,and is great for macro shots. I have come to the conclusion that there's NO perfect camera out there,(and I've had Panasonics,Canons,Nokons,etc.,)but the HS10,makes a fair attempt!

The size of the sensor is what it has to be for that lense, an APS-C sensor would indeed be nice but the lense would have to be..well not sure exactly but it would be big, something like 2 feet long to give the the 720mm equivilant that the HS10 can offer. It's a grand camera, the lens is incredible considering the range it offers. There are a couple of irritating weaknesses mind, quite a bit of shutter lag for a modern camera (it's no better on that score than my old Fuji S5600), also the screen and veiwfinder, both work OK but the resolution is not good, they went to the trouble to put a manual focus on the camera so it's a pity they've limited that features effectiveness in this way.

I have been a professional press photographer for over 40 years, now semi pro, and have used a multitude of cameras and lenses from Leica to Nikon to Bronica. The Fuji HS10 is probably one of the best I have found. I paid £265 for mine, amazing considering what you get for the money. Love it and now it's on its way to India for a couple of months.

I explored all possible cameras in the market and now i feel that i made the right decision to purchase HS10. It has decent picture quality- for sure better than the likes of sony's, nikons, kodaks or canons with a similar price range.I strongly recommend HS10 for users who are not prepared to handle DSLR cameras but still want the feel and functionality of DSLR cameras

Having owned my HS10 for a while now,I really enjoy using it,and it still one of the best of the superzooms you can buy.. The manual could be better,as,for example, there's no guidance on movie modes,or,if you select Face Detection,it doesn't tell you anywhere that you can't also select Auto Focus tracking. But,it's still a well made,solid,piece of kit,and the rear screen is great!

Some people have critisised the lack of printed manual. I would point out that the Adobe manual on the CD allows you to print the user manual on A5 sized paper which can be trimmed to the size of teh supplied 'Basic manual'

Being a Fuji owner for a number of years. I turned to Nikon for the D90 & D5000. I wanted something with a very respectable zoom & cmos sensor. Hey presto the HS10 arrived in my Christmas stocking. Priced @ sub £250 its a reall bargain, features for the beginner & advanced alike. Its the sort of camera that you can grow up with & love to learn to use. Spoil yourself & save almost a couple of hundred pounds when first introduced.

As the comment from G Watson, my HS10 was also a Christmas Pressy. The best ever yet. The zoom feature is amazing.

As a Fuji owner of SS500- a S1600- an AV130 and an S5Pro taking photos for 50+ years and as A member of the Royal Photographic society since 1982,now retired I am Lecturing I would suggest anyone to look closely at Fuji.

For the price I cannot fault it! Yes some of the techie comments are correct but the end results, particularly in low light, are superb.

I was just about to buy one but should I wait to see what the HS20 turns out like

I just purchased HS10 and its really worth it. it is really really amazing and im truly satisfied.

i am using it during last one year,every day something new comeout from it.amazing.

Having used the HS-10 for several months, I can honestly say, it takes brilliant pictures just like their colour slide film. I thought my Olympus E-510 took brilliant pictures but the HS-10 is just as good. It doesn't need a bigger sensor or more pixels. It seems that between 10 and 12 million pixels are the optimum number for picture quality/ definition/noise ratio. Time and time again, its a 10m pixel camera that seems to give the best picture quality. Fuji are so underated mainly because the big 2 dominate the market and all the camera reviewers think, anything other than a Nikon or Canon is inferior. Well, the Fuji S5-Pro produced some of the best dynamic colour pictures ever and many advertising studio shots for the big wide world were on the S5 Pro. I can understand Fuji's reluctance to enter the DSLR rat/pixel race, so they have found a very nice niche with super zoom cameras. If you can live with a rather small eye level view finder [which works for me] fine but you do have the option of the large screen on the back Get this camera, learn how to use all its modes and settings, you won't regret it. Has anyone owned an S100FS and changed to an HS10? Should this be considered an upgrade despite less pixels?

noisy clunky in video mode its got to be the noisest camera i have ever oned this is my third fuji over ten years and by far the worst for video even after firmware update the sound quality is that bad dont even bother

Great camera I have 4 Fuji cameras, this is far the best. If Albert doesn't rate video he should use a dedicated video camera.

could anyone tell me please how many dpi do the pictures have at full 10MPx? cheers
