Review: The ‘zone system’ championed by Ansel Adams sometimes seems like a holy grail of photography, a subject shrouded in mystery. Chris Johnson’s book seeks to strip away the veneer and highlight the practical nature of the process. The basic premise of the zone system is pre-visualising your images then controlling the light with your camera’s settings. Admittedly it will do more for film users who have slightly more options, but there is a good section for the digital photographer and it would be of particular benefit to any photography student keen to learn more about its role.
