If you’ve ever found yourself in a wonderful location but at the wrong time of day, and wondered where the sun would be if you returned at dawn or dusk, this is the gadget for you. It’s essentially a small compass mounted on a white plastic plate, on which the positions of sunrise and sunset are marked for different times of the year.

If, like me, you thought that the sun always rises in the east and sets in the west, as I’m sure I was told at school, then it will come as a surprise to learn that there is a whopping 70° variance in where the sun rises and sets during the year. So a normal compass won’t help you much. It also varies according to how far north you are; this device uses London as its marker point, and for every 500 miles north or south of London you go, you need to compensate by 5°.

The back of the compass provides information on the maximum height of the sun throughout the year – again with the ‘5° compensation per 500 miles from London’ caveat.
