Philips PicoPix PPX2480
Rather than huddling round your PC or laptop to show off your latest photos, why not treat everyone to an old-school slide show? Hook up the Philips PicoPix PPX2480 pocket projector and you could be viewing your images on your living room wall at 120in in size. If people get bored of looking at your photos, the built-in media player supports a host of popular video formats and resolutions up to 1080p with sound – there’s an internal 1W sound bar and 3.5mm audio out jack to connect headphones.
While traditional digital projectors can be large and bulky affairs, the PPX2480 is pretty close to pocket size, measuring 105 x 105 x 31.5mm and weighing 290g. To transfer files and video over to the PPX2480, it comes with a host of connectors – HDMI, VGA, USB, so you’ll be able to hook up a broad variety of devices to it, and an SD/SDHC memory card slot adds even greater scope. If you want to connect an iPhone, you’ll need to invest in an optional iPhone cable, while there’s an additional component cable also available as an accessory.
The light source is an 80 lumen LED light and as we’ve mentioned, can project up to a size of 120in. There’s a tripod socket at the base of the project, so a small mini-tripod can be attached to it – this will be handy when positioning the projector as for best results, you’ll need to get the image flat on your wall/screen. If the projector is slightly off centre, focus can fall off at the edges.
The built-in battery is good for two hours, but there is a supplied AC power supply as well to ensure you see the end of your favourite film. The image projected is good, though don’t expect it to match a full-size projector. Contrast and colour was a little muted compared to the display, though there are fine-tuning controls.
If you can see yourself using a projector a fair amount, then look at a full-size model, but those looking for a neat and high-quality solution, be it to display images, watch films every now and again or to help with a presentation, will find that the PicoPix PPX2480 is a great little device.
