Canadian snapper wins top accolade

A stunning set of images of Canadian landscapes have won the top accolade at this year’s Travel Photographer of the Year awards.

The photographs were shot by North American photographer Darwin Wiggett, who wins a Linhof 612 Technorama panoramic camera, an Intrepid Travel trip down the Ganges River in India in 2009, Adobe CS4 Web and Lightroom software, a personalised Plastic Sandwich leather portfolio book, LEE Filters and a CBL Professional Color Balance Lens.

The competition received entries from 61 countries this year, and shortlisted entrants from 33 countries went through to the final judging round.

Photographers Nick Meers, Chris Weston and Erin Moroney, head of Axiom photographic agency were amongst the judges who selected the winning images for the six categories.

Amonst these were 16-year old Daniel Rooney who won the Young Travel Photographer of the Year category and Charlie Mahoney, the American photojournalist who won the TPOTY New Talent category in 2007 who has returned this year to win the Life portfolio category.

The winning images can be seen at www.tpoty.com and will also be on show at the Travel Photographer of the Year exhibition at Focus on Imaging in February 2009. They will also be published in the TPOTY Journey Three book.
