As the new a7 and a7R are full-frame cameras, Sony has teamed up once again with Carl Zeiss to provide a selection of full-frame E-mount lenses to complement them.
Carl Zeiss has contributed two Sonnar T* primes to the range. The SEL35F28Z is an FE 35mm f/2.8 prime that has been dust and moisture-proofed with resistant seals and weighs just 120g.
The SEL55F18Z is a Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA lens. It has also been weatherproofed, and features a 9-blade circular aperture.
Also from Zeiss is the SEL2470Z: a Vario Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 lens, the first ever full-frame Carl Zeiss zoom, which boasts five aspherical elements and Optical Steadyshot.
The SEL2870 is one of Sony's own contributions: a 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 lens that also sports Optical SteadyShot and weatherproofing.
The SEL70200G is Sony's first E-mount G lens: a 70-200mm f/4 lens that has been optimised for performance with the a7 and a7r. It features AA (advanced aspherical), Super ED and ED glass elements, as well as Sony's Nano AR coating to reduce flare and ghosting.
Sony said this morning that these lenses will mark the beginning of a comprehensive full-frame E-mount range. By 2014 we can expect up to ten lenses in the range, by 2015 up to 15. Among the series will be an f/4 wide-angle zoom and a large aperture prime, both from Zeiss.
Sony has also added to the A-mount series with the SAL70200G2, an updated version of the 70-200mm f/2.8 G lens, with added Nano AR coating and improved AF tracking.
Sony will also be releasing a couple of adapters to bridge the gap between E-mount and A-mount: the LA-EA4 and LA-EA3.
Both allow for the use of E-mount lenses with A-mount cameras, however the LA-EA4 includes Translucent Mirror Technology that allows for fast, accurate phase detection AF - a feature not supported by the more basic LA-EA3.
The new lenses and mount adapters are all available for pre-order now on www.sony.co.uk. The SEL35F28Z, SAL70200G2, LA-EA3 and LA-EA4 go on sale in UK from the end of November. The SEL55F14Z and SEL2470Z will be available in January 2014, the SEL2870 and SEL70200G in Spring 2014.
