APS-C

A definition of APS-C

A sensor format derived from the APS film system. The size of these sensors varies slightly between different manufacturers; they are much larger than those found in compacts and slightly larger than those in Micro Four Thirds cameras, although they are smaller than full-frame types.

Most entry-level DSLRs and a number of compact system cameras employ these, as do high-end enthusiast compacts such as Leica's X1 and Fujifilm's X100. Although they can be CCD or CMOS types, the latter variety is more dominant today.
