An upgrade on the less-than-a-year-old W200, the W300 sees improvements in several subtle forms. While the sensor remains the same 1/1.7in size, it now hosts 13.6MP as opposed to 12.1MP, and the LCD screen has increased from 2.5in and 115k pixels, to a more competitive 2.7in and 230k pixels.

However, little much else has changed – the 3x optical zoom remains, as does the 100-3200 ISO range and 14 scene modes. The camera has a reassuring feel to it, aided by the titanium coating, though the LCD does scratch easily. The button layout on the rear is sensible, and mode dial easily located.

The metering system performs well and the AF system is both prompt and effective. Images are generally pleasing, with noise well-controlled, though fringing is a bit of an issue, and highlights tend to blow easily.

Verdict

A pricey option, though good results and handling make this a competent compact.
