16MP sensor, 24x zoom Olympus SZ-30MR released alongside 12.5x zoom Olympus SZ-20

Olympus has launched two new models capable of impressive optical magnifications, some high continuous burst rates as well as the ability to shoot both stills and video at the same time in the shape of the SZ-30MR and SZ-20.

The SZ-30MR has a 24x optical zoom, 1080p video and a 9fps continuous shot rate. Forming the backbone of this new superzoom model is a 16MP sensor, which is capable of shooting high definition video and taking hgh resolution stills at the same time, which is a word’s first for a digital camera. With so many models offering above 30x optical zoom it comes as something of a surprise that Olympus hasn’t attempted to better the likes of the Nikon P500, which possesses 36x magnification.

Having a 24mm wide angle lens will certainly make the Olympus SZ-30MR more versatile for landscape and macro work, with a 3in LCD screen and 3D shooting mode rounding out the major features.

The next model down, the Olympus SZ-20, simply drops the zoom length to 12.5x optical zoom but keeps the other specs the same, including the 24mm wide angle lens.

The only confirmed price this far is for the SZ-30MR, which is at £299 srp. For more information head to the Olympus website.

I am glad to have learned this camera is coming out shortly.

I have a decent DSLR from Pentax and have been looking to replace my compact camera (Canon A620) that I can have with me at all times. It needs to produce very good image quality, but since the DSLR doesn’t do video, it needs to excel at that.
I heard from others about the Canon S95 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, and research led me also to the Nikon P7000. One thing they all have in common is max HD video of 720p. While this is good enough with my present tv, my new tv will be 1080p. I don’t want to buy another camera for at least 4-5 years.

Olympus has the XZ-1 model which in addition to the relatively large sensor and fast lens, does 1080p HD videos. But for whatever reasons Olympus choose to use the avi format which limits you to 2GB (7 minutes). I could live with this, and do like the external mic option.

This SZ-30MR does 1040p HD mp4, I’m being swayed by its DUAL TruePicâ„¢ III+ technology. No other compact camera captures HD movies and 16MP still images at the same time! Shoot simultaneous wide-angle and telephoto movies, and full 1080p HD video and VGA movie files. RADICAL!
I would have to trade-off the larger sensor in the XZ-1, but do gain a larger zoom- 25-600 (F3-6.9).With all its features, I’m sure I’ll be happy with it for several years.
