Sony has once again broadened its NEX series of Compact System Cameras with the NEX-6 model.

The new model, which Sony states is targeted towards ‘DSLR intenders’, is pitched between the existing NEX-5R and-NEX 7 offerings, and has wireless connectivity, a 16.1MP APS-C sized sensor and a high-resolution electronic viewfinder headlining its specifications.

With wireless connectivity built in, the model can send images straight to social networking sites and email accounts, and can even be controlled remotely with a smartphone via an app.

A Fast Hybrid AF system, meanwhile, uses phase-detect pixels on the sensor itself to focus faster with less hunting. This is similar to the AF systems used inside other recent Compact System Cameras such as Nikon’s J2 and Canon’s EOS-M.

The new camera also incorporates an XGA Tru-finder, which sees 2,359k million dots incorporated onto an OLED display. On the rear, meanwhile, a 3in LCD display boasts the same tilting facility as other NEX models, which makes it particularly suitable for high-and low-level shooting.

Other features of note include 10fps burst shooting and a built-in flash, together with a physical mode dial on the top plate, as opposed to the virtual menu-based alternatives found elsewhere in the NEX line.

The NEX-6 is expected to launch in November at £710 for its body-only option, and £830 as a kit together with the E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens. A third kit, which includes this lens together with the E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS optic will also be made available at £1030.
