Incorporating anti-shake technology and targeting novice users, the A10 and E10 are new additions to Pentax?s Optio range.
Featuring an 8MP CCD and 3x optical zoom, the Optio A10 is described as an evolution of Pentax?s ?S? series, with a stylish exterior and small dimensions of 88.5×54.5x23mm. Pentax claims that because the CCD is larger than in conventional compacts, with a larger area to receive light, pictures will have ?superior tone reproduction, texture delineation and noise reduction?.
Constructed from seven elements in five groups with three double-sided aspherical lenses, the 38-114mm (35mm equivalent) lens has been redesigned to correct aberrations, while the lens coating reduces flare and ghosting.
To compensate for the effect of camera shake in low light or when the lens is at telephoto, the Shake Reduction system moves the CCD. This follows calculations from a central processing unit, based on the amount of camera shake (detected by two sensors) and focusing data from the lens. Pentax has included a new application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for increased high-speed processing capability.
A total of 15 shooting and playback modes are accessible through the mode palette. Using MPEG-4 compression, the camera captures movies at a rate of 30fps and the Shake Reduction reduces the effect of movement while shooting.
Other features include a 2.5in LCD with a resolution of 232,000 pixels, 24Mb internal memory and high sensitivity level of ISO 800 attainable in Candlelight mode.
The Optio E10 is aimed at newcomers to digital photography. Featuring a 6MP CCD, 3x optical zoom and 2.4in LCD, the camera includes six shooting modes, which are easily accessible through a mode dial located on top of the camera.
With dimensions of 87x60x32mm and weighing 180g, this lightweight compact is powered using two AA batteries. Other features include: 5cm macro focusing distance, 10MB internal memory, and PictBridge compatibility.
Pentax has yet to announce a price for either camera. Find out more at www.pentax.co.uk.
