The MT-24EX twin light offers more functionality than the Canon ring flash, mainly due to the adaptability of the two lights. The flash heads rotate vertically to 45° and horizontally to 60° inwards and 30° outwards. The units can also be rotated around the lens, though movement is more limited than the other units on display. Usefully, the two heads can be removed from the lens and attached to tripods, using the built-in tripod bushes for more lighting variations.

With a GN of 24m @100 ISO the unit shares the same controller unit as the MR-14 EX, but, owing to the greater versatility of the lights, functionality is enhanced – especially when using the individual power settings – as the twin lights provide more positioning options. Illumination is good, especially when the lens is close to the subject.

Verdict

We certainly got some great shots using a 55mm marco. Longer shots are more difficult to achieve with the lights causing hotspots if care isn't taken, so these lights aren't necessarily ideal for beginners.
