Sigma DP3 Merrill Review

Manufacturer:

Sigma has added a new model to its DP Merrill line in the shape of the Sigma DP3 Merrill.

The Sigma DP3 Merrill is designed along the same concept as the Sigma DP1 Merrill and Sigma DP2 Merrill before it, with the same Foveon X3 46MP Direct Image sensor on the inside, although here it’s equipped with a fixed 50mm f/2.8 lens.

Against its APS-C-sized sensor, this produces an equivalent focal length of 75mm, which suits it well to portraiture and nature among other genres.

The objective incorporates Special Low Dispersion and aspherical elements for the benefit of image quality, while its minimum focusing distance is set to a respectable 22.6cm.

As with its siblings, the Sigma DP3 Merrill pairs its sensor up with a Dual TRUE II image processing engine. Comprising two indivdual engines, Sigma claims the camera is capable of fast image processing, as well as the ability to create images with a “three-dimensional feel”.

Other features of note include a 4fps burst option, with the camera’s burst depth said to allow seven Raw images to be captured at a constant speed. Sadly an HD video option has been left out (as has HDMI connectivity) with the Sigma DP3 Merrill only recording VGA files at 30fps on its highest quality settings.

The LCD, meanwhile, measures 3in in size, with its resolution set to 920k pixels. The Sigma DP3 Merrill supports SD media up to the latest SDXC format and comes bundled with Sigma Pro Photo software for processing Raw and JPEG images.

The Sigma DP3 Merrill will become available from next month at an undisclosed price. For further information visit www.sigma-imaging-uk.com
