Re Frank's question: I think you are referring to using studio flash? I have tried to use external flash (my trusted old Nissin 360)with a 3rd party hotshoe adaptor. It fires perfectly, but as you suggest - the viewfinder/screen goes dark when you select a sensible shuter speed for flash and the ambient light is only moderate. It seems to be trying to indicate underexposure in this way, but why?? You can see from the indicator on the screen that it will need the flash!! My work-around at the moment is to raise the internal flash - which turns the viewfinder brightness up to "normal" - and then to cover it with a bit of black tape/card so it doesn't interfere with the Nissin's output. This works, but it does seem like an oversight on Sony's part to dim the viewfinder in this way.

I quite like the view finder going darker or lighter , as It tells me that the exposure is going to be under -over or correct , jus tby looking at the view finder. I have had this for ages in my Minolta a1
