Nikon D3100 review

I think price is too high still, lets wait down the 3 months may go down 30%

main minus point no auto exposure bracket this is useful for hdr image creation. you should review any camera mention minus points also

price already went down. it's $599.00 on amazon (that's 14% below retail)

It's now down to £444 on Amazon, and Nikon offer a £40 rebate - making it now only £400. Bargain!

I currently have the d40. Do you think I will notice a major difference between the two?

Reply to Steve: I am getting the D3100 as an upgrade to the D40. I see the improvements being: better focus system, 11 vs 3; improved ISO, hopefully up to 3200 (only used up to 800 of D40); slightly faster fps; higher resolution; slightly larger lcd; dust reduction system; movies. The negatives are slower sync for flash; slightly smaller sensor. So overall I am hoping for a good improvement over the D40, will find out on Christmas day.

I have owned the d3100 for two months now, so far I am very happy, the one downside I have found is that it has no external mic socket, during filming movies, you can hear the auto focus if the room or area is very quiet.

Since I was a boy Nikon has been the last word in cameras I regard myself as a beginner. Would you advise to buy the D3100 on these grounds?

I have upgraded from a canon G9(fantastic camera) this is a step up the ladder I only hope I am good enough to get its best(£440 from Jessops online)

d3100 hi I got a D3100. Tests say that the basic sharpness is on 3. That is quite soft and i wanna put it on 5. But dont know HOW. please help. Thanks

A follow up to my previous comment: I got the D3100 at Christmas and have been very pleased with it. Low light handling is better than the D40 and usable up to 3200, great for indoor pictures without flash. The focus system is also better though I have to really test it more. One negative that I did not expect is that the 'My Menu' has been removed and so it takes a but more digging through the menus to get to all the settings and the 'Recent Settings' menu does not help much if you are always changing different items as they just get jumbled up. To Bill Peters - a D3100 is an ideal DSLR to learn on, and even for every day use when you do not have specific high end requirements. The guide mode is OK, there are scene modes – portrait, landscape, sports and then you can use the more ‘manual’ modes ‘PASM’ which give you much more control. To Joeezy - you change sharpening through the Picture Controls, see pages 95-97 in the English manual.

So, which camera is technically better (all in all) for a beginner DSLR user for me? I am 13 and I don't know many of these terms and stuff, but I want to learn them- I also have a price limit for the camera- it can hit the D3100 price, but I don't REALLY want to spend that much. Besides, is the video on the D3100 good? What else is so good about the D3100 compared to the D3000? Thanks!

how do you get the movies to work? there is no icon on the top and we're a little bit confused?

I dont understand why getting to movies is a problem, flick the 'live view' lever and press the red button .... your filming!

i have a d3100 and find it a very god camera it is easy to use and give excellent picture quality even in low light i love it

I love it! It works well both for landskapes and still life.

We have found this to be an excellent camera especially as prices have come down £370+VAT? (Gold award?) Used in combination with the 18 - 105mm DX and 55mm - 300mm DX, it covers most assignments with only these three parts to the system. So less to carry around. We are a professional photographers who use Medium format digital and film but we use this 3100 camera at the moment until the D800 is released, we live in hope! We also issue this same system to students on their degree course.

I recently bought my d3100 first slr camera very happy with it, it is taking me time to get used to the correct focusing but can you tell me how can i change my setting to continous i have it set at the moment on single shot and i seem to be missing out on taking photographs quickly if you could tell me this i would most apprecaite it and also can you tell me what setting should i be at i'm currently at auto many thanks

to the right of the button that tells you auto ect.there is another lever which you can move to continous pics

Hi I am not sure whether to go Nikon or canon? its my first DSLR purchase. I am a keen photographer and would like to make an informed purchase. I really dont know. I like canon but somehow I am leaning towards the nikon. Please help me:-)I would like to invest in a good camera with longevity.Rho
