Improved Feature Set

The Canon PowerShot A720 IS features Face Detection technology and uses the DIGIC III processor that has trickled down from Canon’s DSLR range. These are just two of the upgrades that the A720 IS sees against its predecessor, the A710 IS. Other changes come with an extra megapixel (now at 8MP) and an expanded ISO range, now stretching from 80-1600.

Performance

There are no complaints about operating speed, being as quick as we’d expect from Canon’s DIGIC III-equipped compacts. Shooting options are accessed via the Function button, and the mode dial contains the PASM quartet, together with Auto, Scene and movie modes.

Image Quality

Images are impressive: noise is fantastically controlled, with images displaying a good tonal gradation. Barrelling does make itself known at the 35mm end, though.

Verdict

A testament to Canon’s expertise and know-how, the A720 IS ticks many boxes.
