Lowepro Pro Messenger 160 AW Review

The Pro Messenger 160 AW is the smallest of three new Pro Messenger shoulder bags from Lowepro, aimed at those looking for an understated, premium shoulder bag.

We’re big fans of the design – the clutter-free front works well, meaning a discreet and sophisticated-looking bag. It’s function as well as form, as what LowePro terms a FlexFlap Design cover can be folded half way. In this position, the cover is fastened by an internal magnetic clasp, allowing for quick and quiet access to your kit. When unfolded the cover offers more security with Velcro fasteners. Made from what initially appears to be canvas, the Pro Messenger 160 AW is actually made from Lowepro’s custom-milled performance fabric.

The woven polyester base has been treated for colourfastness, moisture and abrasion resistance. The bag has a nice tactile feel, while at the same time appearing really durable. To protect it from the elements, there’s also a built-in All Weather AW Cover that stretches round the bag to protect it when the heavens open.

The Pro Messenger 160 AW can accommodate a decent sized DSLR with a grip – in this case, a Nikon D700, along with a fast standard zoom. Either side of the supple padding we managed to fit a pro-spec 70-200mm and flashgun. There are a couple of smaller pockets for accessories, while at the front there’s a substantially sized compartment – space big enough for another body if needed. There’s no specific laptop/iPad compartment as such, but the rear zipped pocket will hold an iPad, albeit with it poking out the top a touch.

With the bag loaded, the padded shoulder strap is really comfortable considering the weight of the kit inside. If you’re looking for a high-quality, comfortable shoulder bag that’ll fit a decent amount of kit in it, then the Pro Messenger 160 AW ticks all the boxes. It may be a touch pricey, but there’s no denying it does the job very well.
