The Canon MR-14EX ring flash has a guide number (GN) of 14m @ ISO 100, and either tube can be adjusted down to 1/8 of its power, which is useful for creating shadows or modelling on the subject. A pair of lights at the top and bottom of the unit offer focus assistance in low light. The ring flash is designed to be used with 58mm filter sized lenses.
Among the numerous options on board are High Speed flash, for using a shutter speed higher than the standard flash sync and second-curtain synchronisation. The controller can also wirelessly fire remote slave flash units.
Verdict
The MR-14EX is simple to use with E-TTL, and there?s also a manual mode for more creative control. Illumination is generally good, though longer lenses are needed to prevent corner fall-off if shooting with a flat background; 50mm or more is recommended. Exposure is slightly under, so it?s worth experimenting to find your ideal flash adjustment.
