Pentax Optio RZ10 Review

Manufacturer:

Price as reviewed:

£159.00

A mid-zoom compact, the Pentax RZ10 has a 14.1MP sensor, HD video capture at 720p, and a 28-280mm zoom lens. You also get sensor-based and ISO-based image stabilisation modes plus Face Recognition, Blink Detection and Smile Capture options.

Predictably at this price the body is an all-plastic affair, although style-wise the bold finish combined with the oversized lens ring sets it apart from its peers. The RZ10 also has a very fast start-up time, and travelling through the 10x focal range is also quick, though some may find it too quick for precise control.

Image-wise, a fair amount of detail is captured, even if it does tend to be accompanied by image noise. Sharpness is maintained very well towards edges and corners, with just a slight dip in the latter. Exposures are balanced, though highlights often blow out prematurely. The Auto White Balance system is largely reliable, but slight cold or the occasional magenta tinge can creep in.

Verdict

A pleasant surprise, mixing a decent range of features with reasonable image quality at a low price
