Casio EXILIM EX-H10 review – Features

The Casio H10 is a 12.1MP compact with a 24mm wide angle lens that, thanks to its 10x optical zoom, extends to a respectably long 240mm.

A 3in LCD screen, sensor-shift image stabilisation and ultra-long battery life – to a claimed 1000 images per charge – go to show the high-end the H10 sets out to achieve. There’s even a 720p 30fps HD movie mode.

For usability, the EX-H10 provides Auto and Best Shot modes for point-and-shoot simplicity, whilst ‘Best Shot Auto’ is able to recognise the scene at hand and auto-apply the appropriate settings – the best of both worlds. Additional features such as face detection and even a ‘Make Up’ mode – which softens the larger skin areas of the face for a more brushed and flattering finish – also go to show that the H10 is ideal for those portraits too. Clever features like Tracking AF will even locate your subject in frame and maintain focus, even if they move throughout the frame.

Although relatively slim, the EXILIM H10 does still carry some bulk – the product of stowing away a 10x optical zoom lens no doubt. It’s a simple-looking compact that’s certainly functional, though perhaps less sleek in appearance than some other compacts available on the market. To add to its appeal the H10 is available in five different colours – blue, gold, silver, pink or black.

The H10’s menu system looks relatively simple, but is easy enough to navigate. There are a lot of ‘Best Shot’ scene modes though, perhaps 38 is actually a few too many than will actively be used. A one-touch movie button allows for quick HD movie capture rather than having to dig through the menus, and two buttons on top of the camera are for quick-access ‘Make Up’ and ‘Vivid Landscape’ modes too.
