With a GN of 11m @ ISO 100, the Olympus ring flash is compatible with the Zuiko 14-54mm and 50-200mm lenses, and the 50mm Macro with an optional adaptor. The unit consists of a single circular tube for even illumination, with a set of four modelling/AF assist lamps in each corner, giving the unit a square look.

The light attaches via a coiled lead to the FC-1 controller, the same unit as used on the twin flash. From here you can choose between manual and TTL operation, set flash exposure compensation and so forth.

The Olympus unit is simpler to use than the Canon alternative, but has marginally less features. It does work well with E-System cameras and is extremely easy to use, though some of the features on the controller pertain to the twin flash so don’t work with the ring flash. Light quality is very nice – even at focal lengths over 40mm – but there’s some fall-off and a very slight hot spot at wider angles.

Verdict

For close-up and portrait work, or even general flash photography, the unit is very capable. This is a good solid unit, but limited in its compatibility and slightly more expensive than its competitors. It’s easy to use though, and turns in good results.
