Polaroid has introduced the first interchangeable lens camera based on the Android platform.

The Polaroid iM1836, which together with its 10-30mm kit lens bears a striking resemblance to Nikon’s 1 J-series of Compact System Cameras, runs the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS – the same as that used in the popular Nexus 7 tablet.

On the inside the camera features an 18.1MP sensor, although the sensor is located inside the lens rather than the body.

This mirrors the Ricoh GXR concept, in that the lens and sensor are combined within one interchangeable module.

The Polaroid iM1836 also features Wi-fi and Blueetooth connectivity as standard, and although there’s no viewfinder – nor the option to attach one thanks to the lack of a hotshoe – the rear sees a 3.5in LCD screen which has been equipped with capacitive touch functionality.

Other highlights include 1080p (full HD) video capture, as well as panoramic shooting and blink detection.
