In terms of zoom length few can best the 30x optical magnification of the HS20, especially as the entire focal length can be controlled with a DSLR-style zoom ring. The EXR sensor makes for improved low light performance but it’s in the highly versatile 24-720mm lens that the HS20 finds a marquee feature, making it a helpful DSLR backup.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS

Physically the PowerShot SX40 HS may not look much different from the PowerShot SX30 IS, but those last two characters make all the difference. With a new high speed 12MP sensor the camera can shoot at over 10fps, and the 35x optical zoom is one of the largest currently available on a fixed lens compact camera.
