Nikon D4 Guided Tour Part Two

  • JOE PRETE

First let me say, I’m sorry about the comment that I made regarding the accent of the interviewer paul____ & the NIKON U.K. REP. JAMES BANFIELD. I am not happy about the way that sounded at all. They are speaking English, Proper English. In the U.K. everyone sounds like that. In fact they would most likely say that they don’t understand me. I Went to my Mac tower, with top audio speakers & EQ, and I can hear more each time I listen.

Having said that, the more I learn, there’s bad along with the good. I assumed that was why they have not replied. He says that NIKON is introducing the CFA approved XQD CARD. However, it’s SONY That developed and introduced the XQD card. SONY is also the only Company that is producing the card. SANDISK & LEXAR Passed on the opportunity to get involved with the card. Nikon is making it sound like it is their development & they introduced it.

IT IS SONY’S CARD & apparently nothing new, a form of this memory is built in computers, and has been for some time. Using this card, may prove to hinder rather than help the usefulness of this camera. You can buy a CF or SDHC CARD in any pharmacy or newsstand all around the world.

Try to buy a XQD card (& reader) while you’re working out in the field. Also, we don’t have a track record for this card. It hasn’t proved itself anywhere, and bringing something new to the olympics may not seem to smart to a lot of Photographers. In fact, 90% OR MORE cards in use are SDHC or some form of it, and the cards & readers are available everywhere. (will we sink without SONY?) I hear they want their own sensors now!

It looks like the market is about to settle on SDHC. Many cameras have TWO SDHC CARDS. In fact, I could imagine THEM USING 3 OR 4 SDHC CARDS. Lower level SLR’s will soon come with two SDHC CARDS. With most medium to high level cameras 4 SDHC SLOTS would be simple. I like the cards to be the same, Like a pair.

I can understand most writers being careful about making predictions. (Not me,) I’m sure that I make mistakes, everyone does really, but I’m not afraid to admit it. I thought DIGITAL was a fad, for computer nerds. I admit it. I still shoot film too. Several weeks ago many said the D4 would have 36MP. Even now, they talk about the D800.

I Have D700 I don’t think there’s a D800 YET, IS THERE? I read a comment by a guy that said enough already with the 200,000 ISO Ratings, he said just assign a number 1-9 representing the light level. He wasn’t a kid, he talked about ASA. I wish I got his name to give him credit! OH, we can take pictures on the moon now, without a flash too. I’m sure that will help many people.

I could have bought & furnished a home in the time it takes them to give us the right information.

I give credit to Canon, we don’t need every brand of micro camera’s with interchangeable lenses! You want one, there’s too many brands now. They should have made 1 or 2 and a bunch of lens adapters. I don’t think we need 15 film formats either. Nikon put a switch on the D4, JUST DIAL IN YOUR SENSOR SIZE. I guess that’s good, we can sell off some gear now, to who though?

It used to be that, if you had any questions, you’d go to a Forum or call their tech support (now in the D.REPUBLIC) Nikon’s EAST coast office/repair is only 20 miles from my house. Canon bought a giant vacant land 10 blocks from NIKON (Route 110 & the L.I.E. for you guys in the East Coast-U.S.A.) I guess we have to wait for the release to get the full story, but doesn’t it seem like they should know this stuff now?. … Joe Prete

I must admit, I was mad at Nikon, Fuming mad is more like it. Nikon had just introduced the J1& V1, & Canon introduced their new DSLR EOS 1DX which appeared to be all that a pro needs. There were rumors. but Nikon said the J1 & V1 took 4 years. What were we to think, were the rumors wrong?

Out of nowhere, all of a sudden, they brought out the D4. The photo world was now able to breath again. The D4 was every thing the 1DX was and so much more, it’s a Photographic miracle. THIS MAY BE THE LAST CAMERA YOU NEED! UNLESS YOU LIKE IT SO MUCH, YOU BUY TWO! This May Be The Best CAMERA THAT NIKON HAS BUILT, Don’t get me wrong, The Canon is Nice, BUT THIS, THIS IS THE ONE FOR SURE! Am I still Mad? I GOT OVER IT MANY SPECS. AGO! I WAS NEVER ONE TO CARRY A GRUDGE…….. Joe Prete
