Olympus mju 750 Review

Manufacturer:

Price as reviewed:

£300.00

Olympus make two very similar models in the shape of the Olympus mju 740 and 750. The more-interesting one – and the one we’re looking at – is the 750, which unlike its stablemate has mechanical image stabilisation.

Features
Besides image stabilisation, the Olympus mju 750 (Olympus Stylus 750 in the US) also has Olympus Bright Capture technology, with a top ISO speed of 1,600, getting the best of both worlds in low light. Bright Capture also increases the brightness of the LCD in low light.

Design
Like other mjus, the 750 features an all-weather casing. The wedge-shaped design is easy to hold, and the new design of the four-way controller on the back is attractive and not fiddly for those with oversized digits.

Performance
This is a simple compact to use, with the usual array of scene modes and program AE, so don’t expect masses of control. However, the Bright Capture technology works well enough in dark places, making this an ideal party camera.

Image Quality
In general, Image Quality is more than acceptable, though there is some concern about shadow noise, even at ISO 80. Incidentally, in low light the auto ISO still remains at ISO 80, so thank heavens for the image stabilisation.

Value For Money
Street prices are better than the RRP, and not many lifestyle cameras can offer the same level of protection or zoom range.

Verdict

The mju 750 continues Olympus’s reputation as a convenient easy-to-use compact, that mostly does what it’s supposed to.
