Features
The Olympus mju 730 (Olympus Stylus 730 in the US) packs in a 7MP CCD, 3x optical zoom and 20 scene modes. There are few manual functions, but a program mode enables customisations such as selectable ISO up to 3200, two metering options and Super Macro functionality. A super-large LCD screen also makes comfortable viewing.

Design
An all-metal outer body and slimline proportions make this a stylish and portable little number. Despite the larger LCD screen, controls are still a good size and in easy reach.

Performance
It’s a simple compact to use but a slow operator, especially in Super High Quality mode. It takes around two seconds to spring to life but longer between shots and around three seconds just to switch to playback mode.

Image Quality
Colourful images that stand up to close scrutiny are the order of the day. Sharp details and edges are abundant, though there is evidence of overprocessing. It’s not so great in low light, and the autofocus occasionally misses the target, but for an everyday shooter the 730 is fine.

Value For Money
The 730 presents fair value, but as it’s a John Lewis exclusive, its price is unlikely to reach the dizzying lows of rival cameras available on the net.

Verdict

Another good quality compact from Olympus. It’s not especially cheap or fast, but the mju 730 gives attractive images.
