Fujifilm’s Z range has always been one to make a style statement, and the Z20D offers the latest. Behind the sliding lens cover lies a standard 35-105mm equivalent focal range and 10MP sensor, but the Face Detection, MPEG-4 video recording and a choice of five colour options mark it as a compact for the young and techno-savvy. Something that also stands out is its performance – with fast focusing and a clear menu system – though sadly the dawdling zoom pace doesn’t quite match this. There’s also no control over metering and at 2.5in the LCD screen is a touch cramped. As for images, exposures are generally good and shadow detail holds up particularly well. Highlights don’t, however, and noise begins to introduce itself to images at around ISO 200, while images are laced with purple fringing and are quite soft.
An overall good if imperfect offering, the Z20fd is one of the best compacts around the £100 mark.
