Nikon is hoping to replicate the huge popularity of the D70, one of the biggest digital successes of recent years, with two new digital SLRs, the D70s and D50.
Featuring the same 6MP DX Format sensor as its predecessor, the Nikon D70s is the successor to the D70. It includes a Nikon F mount enabling AF and DX Nikkor lenses to be used with the camera.
An updated menu system, increased flash coverage, compatibility with the new MC-DC1 remote code and an improved 5-area AF system are some of the enhancements made to the new model.
The new EN-EL3 lithium-ion battery can take up to 2,500 shots from a single charge and the LCD screen has increased from 1.8 to 2-inches.
The D70s will retail at £699.99 for the camera body, and £899.99 with an 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G lens.
Targeting novice photographers, the D50 is an entry-level SLR featuring a new 6MP DX CCD, 3D Colour Matrix Metering II, a continuous shooting rate of 2.5 fps and a fast USB 2.0 interface.
As well as manual exposure modes, the mode wheel contains seven scene options including the new ?Child? setting where the hue and saturation have been adjusted to produce optimum results.
Available in black or silver, the D50 will retail in a kit along with an AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor 18-55mm lens for £649.99 or at £549.99 for the body.
Nikon has also announced two ultra-compact lenses designed specifically for the D50. The AF-S DC Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm and AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm lens will both retail at £199.99.
Existing D70 users can also take advantage of a new firmware upgrade to update the menus in line with the D70s, enhance the performance of the 5-area autofocus system and add support for PictBridge compatible printers. Download it at http://nikonimaging.com/global/support/download/index.htm.
