At Photokina this morning Sigma not only announced 3 new lenses, but also a reorganisation of their lens line-up.
The re-structuring sees the lens line-up split into three categories: Contemporay, Art and Sports. Not only that, but the design of this lenses has changed a fair amount from previous Sigma lenses. Much cleaner in their design, they have a much higher-end look.
The concept of the Contemporary category is to incorporate the very latest technology and keep size and weight to a minimum, without compromising their advanced optical performance or utility. Expect this category to be largely made-up of standard zooms, telephoto zooms and high magnification zooms.
To launch this category, Sigma has announced the new 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM. This APS-C only lens provides a 35mm focal length equivalent of 25.5-105mm and is an upgrade to its predecessor that was launched back in 2009.
The Art category of lenses has been developed with an emphasis on artistic touch and will be comprised of a broad range of focal lengths and designs. This will include large-aperture prime lenses, wide-ange lenses, ultra wide-angles lenses, as well as macro and fisheye lenses.
This first new lens for this category is the 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM. This lens’ axial chromatic aberration is minimized, which renders a cool and smooth out-of-focus image.
Finally, the Sports category which as the name suggestes, will comprise of telephoto lenses, telephoto zoom lenses and super telephoto zoom lense.
The launch lens for this category is the 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM. With redesigned mechanics, this Sports lens is an update from its predecessor released in February 2011.
