In light of the increased popularity of digital SLRs, Microsoft has announced support for the RAW image format in Windows.
The company has worked with leading players in the digital photography industry, Adobe, Nikon, Canon and Fujifilm to ensure that the next version of Windows ? code-named ?Longhorn? ? provides support for RAW files.
Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP will be available as a free download. Within Windows Explorer and Windows XP, users will be able to view and print Canon and Nikon RAW image files, as well as view EXIF data.
Amir Majidimehr from Microsoft comments: ?By working with industry leaders to extend support for RAW in Windows, we are removing the obstacles for consumer use of RAW and enabling a seamless platform for the next era of digital imaging innovation.?
Future issues of Microsoft Digital Imaging suite will also offer support for RAW files.
Microsoft is also developing a certification program that enables third-party hardware and software manufacturers to develop their own codes that can be certified and implemented in Windows.
