Light Work Studio Portraiture Workshop

The best way to explore studio lighting for portraiture is to see it in action up close and then get to try out the ideas for yourself with an experience photographer on hand. With a small group (maximum of eight students) this is the workshop where you can see what’s going on, try your hand at the techniques and where there’s plenty of opportunity to ask questions of the tutor.

Areas covered includephoto workshop

  • Approaches to portraiture – getting the best from your sitter
  • Understanding light quality – what light to use and why
  • Modifying light – reflectors, diffusers, snoots and honeycombs
  • Using a flash meter – introduction to light measurement in the studio
  • Correct colour rendition – how to achieve it simply
  • Editing specifics for portraits – sharpening, monochrome conversion and creating a signature look

Itinerary

  • 09.15-09.30 – Arrive tea/coffee
  • 09.30-12.30 – The morning session will be an interactive demonstration of typical lighting scenarios
  • 12.30- 1.15 – Lunch in the Blue Sky Cafe. Tea/coffee and light refreshments shall be provided throughout the day
  • 13.30-16.00 – In the afternoon you’ll get to try the ideas explored in the morning session for yourself
  • 16.00-17.00 – Plus plenty of time has been set aside at the end of the day for questions and further demonstration

After Care: After the course you will be sent a set of notes based on the actual content of the course on the day – no need to worry about making your own notes!

Skill Level: You’ll need to be comfortable using your camera in manual mode and have a good grasp of basic photographic technique.

Equipment: Any camera that allows you to set exposure and focus manually and is fitted with either a standard hot shoe (for Sony/Minolta types you will require an adaptor) or a PC flash sync socket will be suitable for the workshop.

A short telephoto or zoom lens that covers the medium telephoto range is desirable

Tutor: Garry McNamara has been a professional
photographer and teacher for thirty years. His client list includes
Bonhams, The University of Arts, The Crafts Council and H.R.H the Prince
of Wales. His work has been exhibited and published worldwide.
