The Guildhall in London played host to the annual Picture Editor Awards, which this year were presented by Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Now in their 12th year, the awards are designed to recognise excellence in the field of press photography for newspapers and individual photographers. Sponsors of the illustrious event include BG Group, Getty Images, Nikon and Diageo.
Judged by picture editors from throughout the UK, the Portfolio and Single Image categories saw more than 670 photographers submitting 8300 entries.
Winners included Jeff Mitchell from Reuters who (for the second time) was named BG Group Photographer of the Year; Toby Melville from Reuters who was pronounced Nikon Sports Photographer of the Year; Simon Hulme from the Yorkshire Post who was the Getty Images Regional Photographer of the Year; and Dan Chung from The Guardian, who won the first Nikon Celebrity Photographer of the Year.
The Daily Mirror won the Getty Images Newspaper of the Year award, The Herald Magazine was named Magazine of the Year and The Herald was pronounced Regional Newspaper of the Year.
