Canon has just passed the 50 million milestone in its EF lens production. That’s almost a lens for every man, woman and child in the UK.
The company began producing EF lenses in 1987 with the birth of its EOS system, whose debut model was the EOS 650. Over the years Canon has added various innovations to the lenses such as the introduction of Ultrasonic motors (first seen in the
EF 300mm f/2.8L USM in 1987) and Optical Image Stabilisation (on the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USMin 1995).
In case you’re wondering, the 50 millionth lens off the production line was an
EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM.
