Canon has this morning continued its busy day of announcements with the launch of the Canon PowerShot S200.

The new compact is the latest addition to the manufacturer’s acclaimed ‘S’ series of pocketable PowerShot models, promising an advanced shooting experience and impressive image quality.

At the core of the S200 sits a 10.1MP CCD sensor complete with Canon’s latest HS image processing set-up – a combination of high-sensitivity sensor and DIGIC processor which has proved successful in the past for Canon.

As has been the case with previous S-series models, the Canon S200 packs a serious optical punch to accompany its advanced sensor, with a 5x optical zoom present complete with 24mm wide angle and f/2 maximum aperture.

Furthermore, the lens is optically stabilised meaning that – complete with the f/2 maximum aperture – you should be able to capture sharp images in a variety of conditions.

The rear of the camera houses the model’s LCD screen which – measuring in at 3in and with a resolution of 461k-dots – is in keeping with some of its pocketable advanced compact peers.

The screen also benefits from a tempered glass layer that, Canon states, will ensure greater clarity and enhances durability

As well as featuring a wide range of Auto and scene modes, the S200 also features full manual control in conjunction with the popular Lens Control Ring first seen on previous S series models.

Completing an impressive specification is integrated Wi-fi functionality. Although it doesn’t allow for the remote control of the camera, it does facilitate the wireless upload of images to popular social networks, as well as a range of cloud back-up services.

The Canon S200 is due on sale from May of this year, and will arrive with an SRP of £279.
