Confirming internet rumours which surfaced a few weeks ago, Canon has announced a new entry-level model, the EOS 1000D.

The model inherits features and design elements from the EOS 450D launched earlier in the year, and stands as the lightest EOS DSLR in Canon?s digital portfolio.

A 10.1MP CMOS sensor is joined by DIGIC III processing technology, while the EOS Integrated Cleaning System seen in previous models also features. The camera can shoot at a continuous rate of 3fps while a 7-point wide-area AF system features a f/5.6 cross-type centre point to aid autofocusing.

As with the 450D live view is also possible, offering two AF modes and providing a 30fps video feed. The feed is displayed on a 2.5in LCD screen which features a 230,000dot resolution.

The camera will be available from the end of July at a body-only price of £499.99. A kit option, together with the 18-55mm IS lens will be priced at £579.99.

Canon has also announced availability of a mark II version of its Speedlite 430 EX flashgun. The 430EX II is said to recycle approximately 20x faster than its predecessor and features a new mounting foot to provide extra stability. Compatible with the TTL II flash algorithm employed by recent Canon DSLRs, a range of function are available on the model such as first and second curtain flash synchronisation, exposure compensation, and nine custom functions.
