Nikon has added three new beginner models to the mix with the L25 and L26 sub-£100 compacts and the S2600 Argos exclusive compact. The two L models offer a 10 and 16MP sensor respectively, where the S2600 has 14MP.

The COOLPIX S2600 is impressively thin at 19.5mm, and adds a 5x optical zoom to proceedings. The HD video mode sits at 720p and, for the absolute beginner, a number of auto modes are able to shoot dependent on available light and scene modes without the user needing to press a button. The COOLPIX S2600 is exclusive to UK retailer Argos now.

The Nikon COOLPIX L25 and COOLPIX L26 are the budget offerings, both with a 5x optical zoom. The L25 has a 10MP sensor and 3inch screen, with 720p HD movie recording facilities. The L26 has a 16MP sensor, but is otherwise extremely similar to it's sibling. Both are powered by AA batteries and cost £69 and £99 respectively.
